We are

Monroe County took its
name from our fifth president, James Monroe, when it was created out
of Greenbrier County in 1799.
During the
time of our nation's Civil War a number
of the western counties of
Virginia desired to remain as part of the Union, and in 1863 President
Lincoln signed the bill creating West Virginia, and Monroe County was
included in the new state. The county covers some 303,232 acres and
its economy is
based primarily on agriculture and tourism. |
