The population of Monroe County has
remained fairly stable at about 12,000 in this century. Many of the
family names present in the documents of yesteryear are still
prominent in today's directories.
Historic Rehoboth Church, near Union,
is a National Methodist Shrine. Built in 1786, it is the oldest
Protestant edifice west of the Alleghenies. In frontier days, Union
was the site of a rendezvous point for troops during the Indian
Wars, and thus its name.
